Notre Dame got two huge 4 stars commitments yesterday that came in the form of Safety Derrik Allen from Georgia and Conerback Kalon Gervin from Michigan. Both players sit inside the top 15 at there position in the 2018 rankings. Not only do they get high quality players at a position that seriously was laking in the 2017 draft class they also get them over other big name schools and with a recent change in staff.
Lets start with Kalon Gervin, Gervin is a 6 foot 170 lb corner that comes out of Detroit Michigan. Rivals has him ranked as the 11th best Corner in the class and the 90th best player overall. Gervin is known to be hard working very competitive young man that should fit in really nicely at Notre Dame, however what might be more important is what the significance of this commitment means. While his overall ranking varies depending on what site you visit all of the say the same that Gervin is the 2 best prospect in all of Michigan and instead of staying home and going to play for the maize and blue (I am firmly cementing my stance here as a Michigan hater) or even playing in East Lansing he chose the University of Notre Dame. Gervin has been on record saying education, the coaching staff making him feel like family were two of the main reasons he choose the Irish over the local Universities. He also preached loyalty already to Notre Dame which is huge because of the string of recent de-comitments they received this past class.
Next we come to the later commitment of four star safety Derrik Allen. Allen is ranked as the number 3 safety in the country and the number 36th ranked player in the Nation and a Army All American. Allen choose South Bend over perennial power houses Alabama and Clemson. Another big time get by a new coaching staff coming over and letting recruits know they are still top priority at Notre Dame. Like Gervin academics played a big part in his decision to attend Notre Dame but unlike Gervin Allen visited South Bend. He said that it all clicked for him on his recruiting visit he referenced it feeling like a family environment and how its an all around great program.
Both these players are big gets for this football team who’s 2018 class jumps to the number 2 spot with these acquisitions. The big takeaways from both these signings are the new defensive staff can bring in big time recruits, education is still valued and can draw in top recruits, and even with a down year like last year the prestige of the University and its traditions are a big draw for top prospects. All these things are helping Notre Dame once again compete with the likes of Michigan, Alabama, and Clemson for recruits around the country. GO IRISH!
