Jason Pierre-Paul has been franchised tagged everyone! And with the NFL combine getting started today, we are officially one step closer to week one people! (Sorta). So with the fourth round of the draft in our Mockness Monster, the Giants look to beef up there offensive line.
Round 4 137th overall: Dan Skipper OT, Arkansas
The Bret Bielema product who stands at a towering 6’10” 319 pounds was a key component in the Arkansas running game. Skipper started all 39 games at left tackle since 2014, showing that he can stay healthy on the field (something the Giants offensive line has had problems with in the past). While he has started both sides of the tackle position, NFL scouts see him fitting better at the right tackle spot, so I don’t think we’ve found our perfect replacement for “Skates for Feet” Ereck Flowers in the blind side.
However, if the Giants are able to sign a guy like Whitworth or Okung at left tackle, then having an open competition at right tackle between Flowers, John Jerry and Skipper could be a good solution to the tackle problems this season.
Skipper was an excellent run blocker at Arkansas, no surprise when you have ground and pound Bielema as your head coach. Skipper could add the size and strength the Giants need to help there putrid running game.
Here, Skipper does a nice job taking out the defensive tackle then having the awareness to move towards taking out the linebacker:
Also has a solid punch in pass protection:
Scouts say he struggles with speedy edge rushers however, which was exposed in the East-West Shrine game and against Myles Garrett in the Texas A&M game shown above.
While he might not be a home run, day one starter, he could add some nice depth to the offensive line. And if he can polish some of his technique, the 6’10” tower could find himself anchoring the right tackle spot for the Giants someday.
